@valyraae: Richard Papen if he was a woman #thesecrethistory #richardpapen #fyp #moodboard #darkacademia Richard Papen is the narrator and protagonist of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. He comes from a lower-middle-class background in California but becomes deeply dissatisfied with his ordinary life. Fascinated by beauty, sophistication, and the world of ancient Greece, he transfers to Hampden College and becomes determined to join Julian Morrow’s exclusive Greek class. Richard is insecure about his social background and hides parts of his past in order to fit in with Henry, Camilla, Charles, Francis, and Bunny. His desire to belong is so strong that he becomes fascinated by the group and begins to value their beauty and intelligence over his own moral judgment. (SparkNotes) Richard is also an unreliable narrator because he romanticizes the people around him and often refuses to confront his own responsibility. Although he initially presents himself as an outsider who is simply caught up in his friends’ actions, he ultimately participates in the cover-up of the first murder and helps the group kill Bunny. His guilt becomes increasingly difficult to escape, but even after recognizing that Henry and the others have manipulated him, he remains emotionally attached to them. Richard therefore represents one of the novel’s central ideas: the danger of valuing beauty, belonging, and an idealized identity above morality. (LitCharts)
