I stopped explaining myself a while ago. Not in a rude way. Not in an "I don't owe anyone anything" aggressive way. Just quietly. I just stopped. Because I realized something. The more I tried to make my decisions make sense to other people, the less they made sense to me. I was so busy translating my life into something others could understand that I lost the original meaning. Here's what I've learned. People are going to have opinions about what you do no matter what. You could make the most logical, safe, responsible decision in the world and someone would question it. You could take a wild risk that completely changes your life for the better and someone would say you got lucky or you didn't think it through. You can't win that game. So stop playing it. When you make a decision — about your career, your relationships, your money, your time, your energy — the only person who has the full context is you. Other people are seeing a snapshot. A headline. A two-minute summary of something you've been thinking about for months or years. They don't know what keeps you up at night. They don't know what gets you out of bed in the morning. They don't know the small details that completely change the calculation. They don't know the feeling in your gut that you can't quite put into words but you know is real. You know. And if it makes sense to you, that's enough. I'm not saying don't listen to advice. I'm not saying isolate yourself and never consider other perspectives. That's not wisdom, that's ego. Good advice from people who actually understand you is valuable. Listen to it. Consider it. Let it inform your thinking. But at the end of the day, you're the one who has to live with the outcome. You're the one who has to wake up every morning inside the life you built. You're the one who knows if you're being honest with yourself or running from something. Other people get to have opinions. They don't get to make the final call. I think about all the times I almost didn't do something because I couldn't figure out how to explain it. How to justify it. How to make it sound reasonable to people who weren't living my life. I almost didn't take certain jobs. Almost didn't leave certain relationships. Almost didn't move. Almost didn't start things. Almost didn't quit things. All because I was pre-writing the conversation in my head where someone would ask me why, and I didn't have a clean answer. But life isn't clean. The real answers are messy. Sometimes the truth is "I just felt like I had to." Sometimes it's "I don't know exactly why but I know this isn't right anymore." Sometimes it's "something told me to try." Those aren't explanations that hold up in a debate. But they're real. And they're valid. And acting on them has led me to better places than waiting for perfect clarity ever did. You're allowed to trust yourself even when you can't articulate exactly why you trust yourself. That inner knowing isn't weakness. It's not being naive or impulsive. It's the result of everything you've experienced, everything you've observed, everything you've processed — even the stuff you processed without realizing it. Your intuition is just pattern recognition that happens faster than language. So if you're sitting there right now, hesitating on something because you don't know how you'd explain it to people — consider that maybe you don't need to. Maybe you just need to do it and let the explanation come later. Or never. Some of the best things I've done looked stupid at the time. Some of the best decisions I made, I couldn't defend in the moment. I just knew. And I was right. Not always. I've been wrong too. But being wrong after trusting yourself is still better than being right after betraying yourself. At least the first one teaches you something. The second one just makes you smaller. Your life is yours. The math only has to add up on your own paper. If it makes sense to you, that's all that matters.
