@dexerto: An 11‑year‑old boy in Toronto shocked his parents after stealing $2,000 from the family’s emergency savings and spending it all on Roblox gift cards at Walmart, sparking viral debate about child spending and gaming safeguards. The boy reportedly grabbed an envelope containing $2,000–$3,000 in cash before visiting his grandmother, then slipped away at Walmart to buy the gift cards in two separate $1,000 transactions to bypass the store’s purchase limit. His parents only realized what happened when they noticed the emergency money missing, later confronting Walmart staff who explained that the employee had followed policy and that gift cards are final sale. Walmart Canada confirmed there is no age restriction on gift card purchases, though redemption rules vary by issuer. The case has fueled online discussion about how easily children can make large purchases in gaming ecosystems, with many pointing to similar incidents involving Fortnite and Twitch. 📷: CTV News #roblox #gaming #videogame

as soon as the gift cards are scanned and activated by the cashier, they cannot be refunded (even if they are not redeemed yet) so...

I worked in retail. This mom came in with her 13 year old son (this kid had been at my store before) and asked us if she accidentally left her wallet there. We had not seen it. About an hour later, that kid shows up. He proceeds to grab the most expensive Fortnite v bucks card we had (it was either $50 or $100). He pulls out a wallet that was definitely not his and buys the card with his mother’s card. He leaves, and his mother comes back yelling at us about 20 minutes later because her card showed a purchase there. I had to pull her aside and fill her in that her son was just there buying a Fortnite card. Her face was pure rage and she apologized to us and left. Never saw that kid for a couple months. We he started coming back in, he wasn’t buying any pre paid cards anymore.

Why would you have that much money so easily accessible to your kids? Why not put it in a lock box with a combination lock? It can be expensive but worth the trouble.

that kid would be getting a job as soon as they turn 16 and they will be paying every cent back, then at 18 they will be kicked out.
