The first version was largely lost because the negative was improperly processed at the Mosfilm laboratory. It was shot on Kodak 5247 stock, which Soviet labs were not very familiar with. The film became dark green. So Tarkovsky reshoot almost the entire film.

My mentor told me that i shouldn’t watch Tarkovskys films until I turned 25. But when I was 23, i read a book by the Strugatsky brothers and couldn’t resist watching the film… And it made a huge impression on me. When i was reading the book, i imagined what everything looked like in my head. But Tarkovsky managed to make the film in such a way that every frame was much more beautiful and deeper than anything I had imagined while reading the book.. 10/10 masterpiece
