I private rented from 17 until 33. Aged 30 I woke up and though, hold on, how am I supposed to afford rent when I'm 67? I'd be renting a bedroom from a 30 year old, as a 67 year old man, and that would be 90% of my pension income. So with that fear, it took me three years to save for and purchase a property.

Pensioners are being clever. They are selling their paid for house, moving to rented, blowing the cash on holidays because the government wants to take it off them in inheritance tax or care costs.

We need a colossal boost in social housing immediately because it’s the cheaper option than having someone’s grandma living at a bus stop. Make sure to poke Andy, he can show the video to the tories, who are basically dog walked by whatever the pensioners want, and they’ll have to wind their neck in and let the country build sufficient social housing 🫡

There will also be lots of renters who's parents did own a house but had to spend all its value on care costs so won't be able to pass it on as an inheritance.

They will continue the path that was already walked: they will increase pensions, kick the can down the road and create an unsustainable pensions crisis in a few years around the triple lock. Fixing social housing has too many moving parts to try and tackle.

Social housing also eventually pays for itself, because you're renting at a normalized rate based on a fixed income... so your rent isn't going to leave you unable to pay for food, power etc That's how Saskatchewan in Canada does it and the province also pays basic utilities for those in low income social housing, so your gas, power and water rates, which are also all crown corporations, and have no profit expectations are charging far more resonable rates, it's just a shame that Saskatchewan also seems to have very little opportunity in the job market compared to Alberta, but Alberta is also a libertarian hellscape where nearly everything is privately owned and our premier is hell bent on selling off what isn't 😐
