It's smaller than your thumb, brilliantly golden, and beautiful enough to look like a living jewel. It's also widely considered the most poisonous animal on the entire planet. The golden poison frog (Phyllobates terribilis) lives in a tiny patch of rainforest along the Pacific coast of Colombia. It measures only about 5 cm (2 inches) long — yet it's one of the most toxic creatures known to science. How deadly is it? ☠️ Its skin carries batrachotoxin, one of the most potent natural toxins known. ☠️ A single frog can hold enough to kill roughly 10 adult humans — some estimates say more. ☠️ The lethal amount for a person is almost microscopic — smaller than a grain of salt. ☠️ There is no antidote. The toxin stops nerves and muscles from working, including those that let you breathe. Its bright gold color isn't camouflage — it's the opposite. It's a warning. This is called aposematism: "I am dangerous, do not touch me." Predators that have evolved alongside it know to stay far away. The indigenous Emberá people of Colombia have historically rubbed blowgun darts on the frog's skin to coat them with toxin for hunting — which is exactly how it earned the "poison dart frog" name. Here's the twist most people don't know: the frog doesn't make its own poison. It builds its toxicity from the insects it eats in the wild — likely certain beetles and ants. So golden poison frogs raised in captivity, on a different diet, gradually become completely NON-toxic and harmless. The deadliest animal on Earth isn't born deadly. It becomes deadly from what it eats. One of the most beautiful animals alive — and one of the most lethal. Would you ever hold one, knowing a captive-raised frog is harmless? 👇 #goldenpoisonfrog #poisondartfrog #AnimalFacts #DidYouKnow #mindblown
