@whitlamsberlin: Why is this little path in Potsdam called the Monkey Walk? 🐒 🏰 The Affengang runs right beside Sanssouci, but nobody is 100% sure where its strange name came from 🏴 One story links it to George Keith, a Scottish Jacobite rebel who became one of Frederick the Great’s closest friends and supposedly kept pet monkeys here that kept escaping 🐵 The problem? Historians say the path wasn’t created until around 1892, which is more than 100 years after Keith died 👑 The name may come from a rhesus monkey kept here by Prince August Wilhelm in the 1930s, visible to people passing along the path 🤷 Personally, I prefer the escaped-monkeys version... but it seems unlikely Which story do you believe? ++++++ Image Rights (Wikimedia Commons) August Wilhelm als Redner im Berliner Sportpalast (1932), Bundesarchiv, B 145 Bild-P046293 / Weinrother, Carl / CC BY-SA 3.0 DE
