PSA- was anyone else aware that Tyson was closing?! This one pisses me off. Tyson closing the Joslin plant is a hell of a blow to Rock Island County and to working people across this part of Illinois. And let’s not kid ourselves, this isn’t just about Tyson. It’s the 2,000+ people who now have to worry about their jobs and their families. It’s the truck drivers. The farmers. The people who haul cattle. The contractors. The small businesses that depend on those paychecks getting spent right here in our communities. When a good-paying job disappears, it doesn’t just affect the guy or gal who worked there. It ripples through the entire community. I know Tyson says the cattle shortage and the current beef market are major reasons behind this decision. I understand that businesses have to make money. That’s reality. But it should still make every damn politician in Illinois take a hard look at where we’re headed. We’ve got too many people leaving. Too many good jobs disappearing. Too many businesses looking at Illinois and asking themselves, “Why the hell would I build here?” We’ve got high taxes, high energy costs, mountains of regulations and an economy that seems to make it harder than it needs to be for somebody to simply go to work, build something and make a living. I’m tired of watching working people get squeezed from every direction while politicians pat themselves on the back and tell us how great things are. They’re not great. And the answer isn’t another government program or another damn press conference. We need to make Illinois a place where it makes sense to work, build, farm, manufacture and raise a family. My thoughts are with every Tyson employee and their families. I hope they land on their feet, because these are the people who keep this state moving. Illinois doesn’t need more politicians talking about working people. We need leaders who actually fight for them.
