hdi being a bad metric for bigger countries is not a 'laughable excuse', what is a laughable excuse is to claim America is also a big country when china's population FAR exceeds it, having a hdi even close to a developed nation, which is what China has, is a monumental achievement when you have a population of over a billion. A Chinese person might have less disposable income but its made up for by things like cheap housing and subsidised healthcare, which would cost Americans a huge sum.
