@apexmindspsychotherapy: Polymarket is gambling for people who think they're too smart to gamble. Kahneman and Tversky's prospect theory showed that losses feel psychologically twice as powerful as gains. The prediction market trader isn't driven by the pleasure of winning. They're driven by the unbearable cost of losing and the compulsive need to recover. When the compulsion to place the next position arrives, ask honestly: am I responding to genuine analysis or to the need to recover something. That question is usually the beginning of a very different relationship with the behavior. Ready to do the deeper work? Yes. It’s gambling and we all know it. But, it’s not like solely placing a wager and waiting. You can also trade. People like to view it as investing like the stock market. It’s not that at all though. It’s like day trading, which is also gambling. However, unlike gambling, you can trade your position as the odds change instead of just waiting to see if you win or lose. Here’s a fictional scenario for example: If I buy in when the Steelers are down 21 to 3 in the 3rd quarter, the odds of them winning might be 10%. I buy in because I know the percentage is very likely to go up if they come close to scoring or they actually score. If their odds go up to 15% or 20% and I decide to sell…. I made a 50%-100% gain on my position. Yes, it’s gambling… but it’s different from most sports betting because you can cash out at a gain whether or not your initial bet would have won if you held it.

Turned $10- $150 over the weekend. Could have been A LOT more. And the reason it wasn’t more is EXACTLY what he just said. Those loses hurt so bad. Literally had $5-$10 bets. Bro described my whole weekend. Thank you for this

Thank you for speaking about this. I work in addiction recovery (specifically with gambling addiction) and we are working tirelessly to change the rhetoric around prediction markets as they emerge because they really do cause gambling related harms. The marketing is strategic, and really positions these as investments and you’re absolutely correct that they target a very specific group of individuals 💔
