@letsbetechs: Listen to your customer, but verify everything. ⚡️ Storm outages turned this call into a textbook diagnostic. We're breaking down contactor coil testing (Ohms vs. Continuity) and pulling this contactor apart piece-by-piece to see what actually failed. What's your go-to protection against storm damage? 🔹 Time delays 🔹 Phase monitors 🔹 Surge protectors #hvac #refrigeration #hvacparts #hvactech #hvaclife
What do they do with the wasted food, in the freezer? 😳

I’ve seen coil wires melted off like that after power surges.

Our contactors it's super easy to change the coils and we can therefore easily change the voltage of the coil

I'd say a heavy powersurge or lightning strike hit that coil hard.

a lot of those contactors if you don't have the right amperage contactor but the coil voltage is the same you can swap the coils which makes it nice on a weekend call so the customer can keep going

Did you guys just replace that contactor last week? It looks pretty fresh to me. I think the contactor was on the truck shelf for a long time bouncing around because the old one looked new. 🤔 you never mentioned what the coil voltage was I’m guessing it’s lying voltage 120 not sure back in the days of three phase. There would be one wild like not sure if you know about that, but it was a high voltage like usually wrapped in red tape

I think I know why that relay failed. Let the magic smoke out (was a shorted coil later down the line)

Strange but honest. :
A 260v MOV across the coil will stop that as well as send you to the source of the problem as well. Saving that coil on the new contactor.

For your question at the end, we use voltage monitors to help the system
