@richmanparadise: Inflation may be slowing down, but that doesn't mean life suddenly feels affordable. When the news says inflation is only rising by a small percentage, it can feel completely disconnected from reality. Groceries, rent, homes, insurance, and everyday necessities can still feel dramatically more expensive than they did just a few years ago. The reason is that inflation is about the rate at which prices increase, not whether prices return to where they were. The massive price increases from roughly 2020 to 2023 don't disappear just because inflation slows down afterward. Once prices move higher, they generally stay there unless there is actual deflation. During those years, governments and central banks took extraordinary measures to support economies through the pandemic, including massive monetary and fiscal stimulus. At the same time, supply shortages and disruptions pushed prices higher across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and much of the world. That's why people can feel the effects of inflation long after the inflation rate has fallen. You don't only experience inflation while it's happening. You experience the higher cost of living created by what already happened. The headline might say inflation is under control. But if your paycheck hasn't caught up with the new price of everything around you, it can still feel like the economy is getting more expensive every year. 40-60p in the pound isn’t 20%. Inflation is comfortably 50% IMO.
