Born enslaved in Arkansas in 1838, Reeves escaped during the Civil War, learned the terrain of Indian Territory living among the Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole nations, and returned after emancipation as the most feared lawman on the frontier. He worked undercover in disguises, arrested his own son to prove the law bent for no one, and served thirty-two years until Jim Crow laws stripped his badge in 1907. Decades later, the Lone Ranger legend borrowed his exact story, a masked lawman riding Indian Territory with a Native companion, and never credited the real man behind it.
