Subhash Chandra Bose won the presidency of the Indian National Congress anonymously in 1938 at the Haripura session and again in reelection (within few months) in 1939 by defeating Mahatma Gandhi's candidate, Pattabhi Sitaramayya. Same like now, even though Gharge is the so called president, rule is done by Sonia and her kids. Back then was also similar, whoever is president should do as per the likes of Gandhi and Nehru. Severe ideological conflicts with Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress Working Committees made it impossible for him to govern. He stepped down from the presidency and was later removed from remaining party positions and barred from holding elective office within Congress.
