I think it's not religion because I'm also from a non religious country but the masculinity is very fragile here. I think it's some other aspect of the culture that doesn't try to rob men of joy and whimsy at every opportunity

spot on. i think it also really shows in their friendships with other men. men are more casually touchy with their male friends like throwing their arm over another mans shoulders and so on

When we were in China last year, there were these white girls that were scantily clad (esp compared to the locals who don’t wanna tan) bc of the heat. My 8 year old son pointed them out and said something about how they are sticking out and weird etc. I told him to not judge and instead notice that they’re completely comfortable dressing that way - there was no one looking at them and there was no street harassment. So refreshing!!!

Chinese culture has plenty of both patriarchy or gender roles, it’s just those gender roles are different.

This! I saw some boys wearing the women’s traditional dress. Apparently it’s normal but my friend who’s Caribbean thought it was wrong. But it seemed so normal and in uk people would accept but look at them. So interesting
