THE KEYBLADE TRANSMISSION — RECOVERED REEL 129 [ KINGDOM HEARTS — UNAIRED LIVE-ACTION PILOT 1987 ] The door was built first. Nobody could say what it opened onto. In 1987, a production unit registered in Osaka under the name Twilight Reel Co. — no prior credits, financed by a private foundation whose charter described its purpose only as "the study of thresholds in folk narrative" — completed 33 minutes of 16mm footage across seven nights on a soundstage that the rental agreement lists as booked for a different production entirely. The stage's operator has no record of Twilight Reel Co. ever holding a booking. The set they built has no construction invoice in any surviving document. The Kingdom Hearts pilot had no dialogue for the first fifteen minutes. A boy on an island shore holding a weapon the props department did not manufacture. The prop arrived pre-made, delivered before the order had been placed, in a crate with no shipping documentation. The props supervisor's note dated April 9th 1987: "the weight distribution is wrong for a prop. It is balanced like something intended to be used. I have asked twice where it came from. I will not ask again." Three of the film's settings were built as full standing sets. The art department's plans account for two of them. The third appears in the finished footage — a corridor of doors, lit from behind each one — and matches no blueprint, no construction schedule, and no location the production ever booked. It aired once on a UHF channel in Osaka prefecture, September 20th 1987. Runtime: 33 minutes. The station log carries no title and no production credit. A viewer wrote in describing the closing shot — the boy opening one of the doors, and the film cutting to black a half-second before the interior was visible. Twilight Reel Co. dissolved in December 1987. The soundstage burned down in 1991.
