@crimexpod: What looks like a disturbing Victorian tradition was actually one of the most heartbreaking ways families tried to hold on to their loved ones. 🕯️ During the 19th century, photography was expensive and uncommon, while childhood deaths were tragically frequent. For many families, losing a child or relative meant they might never have another opportunity to capture their face in a photograph. A post-mortem portrait could therefore become the only image the family would ever have of them. Photographers carefully positioned the deceased to make them appear as though they were peacefully sitting or standing alongside their relatives. Hidden supports, carefully arranged clothing, and long exposure times helped create the illusion of a natural family portrait. In some cases, artists even added color to the cheeks or painted pupils over closed eyelids. To modern viewers, these photographs can feel haunting and unsettling. But for Victorian families, they represented something very different: a final opportunity to preserve the memory of someone they loved. Behind every eerie photograph was a family grieving—and trying to remember. 🖤 .......... #ArtSpill #HistoryFacts #DarkHistory #VictorianEra #StrangeHistory Source: @artspilll
