Most engineers are still optimizing the prompt. That's open-loop control — and open-loop means nothing is watching the output. Wrong question: "what's the best prompt for this?" Real question: "what checks the result before I do?" ⬅️ Prompt engineering. y = f(x). Memoryless. You write a prompt, you get a response, and then… nothing. No verifier. No state. Whatever broke stays broken for the whole run, and the next attempt starts from zero — it learned nothing from the last one. You are the feedback loop. That's the entire problem. ➡️ Loop engineering. You stop tuning the string and design a system. GOAL — the objective, written as a spec. PLAN — decompose it. ACT — tool use, actual side effects. VERIFY — a critic checks the result against the spec. Fails? It routes straight back to PLAN and tries again. Passes? It halts. That halt is a fixed point, not a vibe. 👀 The part nobody separates: a better prompt raises your average output. A loop raises your worst one. Open-loop quality is a distribution you're gambling on every call. Closed-loop quality has a floor, because nothing exits until it clears the spec. That floor is the only thing that survives contact with production. The rule: stop optimizing the prompt, start closing the loop. This is why the same model feels brilliant in a demo and unusable in prod. The demo was one lucky sample from an open loop. Nobody built the verifier.
