@bymuseum: And When Did You Last See Your Father? (1878) By William Frederick Yeames 📍 Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool William Frederick Yeames’s painting is tense because the danger comes from one question. A small boy stands before the men questioning him. The scene is set during the English Civil War, and the boy’s family supports the Royalist side. When he is asked when he last saw his father, his answer could reveal more than he understands. His mother and sisters know the danger, but they cannot easily warn him. If they stop him, they may reveal that there is something to hide. That is why the painting is so powerful. The child may not be trying to betray anyone. He may simply tell the truth. Yeames never shows us his answer. He leaves us trapped in the moment before he speaks.
