"Evidence Based Debugging" Debugging embedded systems can quickly become frustrating when failures are intermittent, timing-dependent, or caused by interactions between hardware and firmware. A product might reset every few hours, an RTOS task may occasionally miss a deadline, or an I²C sensor may mysteriously stop responding. In this video, we explore how to move away from trial-and-error debugging and approach these problems as structured, evidence-based engineering investigations. We’ll examine the critical difference between a symptom, failure mechanism, and root cause, then build a systematic debugging workflow around reproducibility, measurement, falsifiable hypotheses, instrumentation, and controlled experiments. You’ll see how oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware watchpoints, GPIO instrumentation, and timing measurements can expose system behavior that software logs and debugger breakpoints may completely miss. We’ll also walk through a practical I²C sensor failure where electrical power behavior ultimately triggers a downstream firmware failure. Finally, we’ll look at what happens after the root cause is found: designing bounded recovery mechanisms, avoiding endless retry loops, creating regression tests, and converting debugging discoveries into permanent engineering knowledge. The goal is to stop asking, “What can I change to make this bug disappear?” and start asking, “What experiment will tell me why the system behaves this way?” That shift turns debugging from guesswork into a repeatable engineering process and helps produce embedded systems that are easier to diagnose, validate, and trust.
