the way that TERF has been broadened/flattened to apply to all transphobes also contributes to the idea that being trans is antithetical to feminism/women’s liberation. it’s frustrated me for a while to see ppl misusing the term in this way bc if every transphobe is accused of being a TERF, that implies that being transphobic is inherently a type of feminism

Yep. Rape survivors participate in rape culture when they say things like, "I've been raped and I don't think that this person is reacting the way that I would have reacted" and using that to not believe them.

Honestly yeah. It feels weird that women have a special name (terf) but men don’t, even when they are way more transphobic. Makes it feel very misogynistic.

really weird leftists can understand all white people being a little racist, all cis people being a little transphobic, all straight people being a little homophobic, etc, because of the society we live in. but we also live in a rape culture and for some reason they don't think the same logic carries across. all cis people being a little transphobic and all that stuff doesn't mean they're all individually transphobes. it just means when you live in society you pick some things up. and sometimes what you pick up is rape culture. that's not an attack. I don't get why people have a logical gap for that specifically.

I made a video months ago saying “I used to be a terf” because i genuinely thought that because i was transphobic and pro choice in 2010 it meant I was a TERF. I had trans people correct me in the comments and I have been trying to understand since. The discourse this last week really made it clear what the difference is. I appreciate this video btw. I think it’s important to understand the difference.

In that case it may not be a good faith misunderstanding of the term, but a way of misrepresenting your criticism to make it into a ridiculous accusation that they don’t have to engage with seriously. To show that they weren’t engaging in rape culture they would have to explain how their argument was valid… but misrepresenting your criticism means they can just say “no im not, shes crazy.” I feel like with creators we see them make this move where they are essentially giving their audience a fig leaf to continue supporting them uncritically

it’s very jarring when this happens in discourse (once i said something was paternalistic and the other person agued that something wasn’t like a father ? 😭) and i think another thing to blame is the algorithm dropping people off into random discourse and those ppl thinking they have an understanding on the subject to talk about it without further research

You’re so eloquent and intelligent, unfortunately too many people choose to not take the time (and brain power) to think about the nuance that you just so perfectly explained.

I’ve been saying this for so long. Like yes actually calling random conservatives RADFEMS is insane and very incel/alt right adjacent. We’re not going to act like we were born yesterday… cis men who weaponize feminism to be racist or violent are NEVER called feminists or terfs. It’s clear as day if you have pattern recognition and common sense

I was called a terf by a group of literal p3d0s (it was on Twitter...)
they didn't actually have anything that was even about gender to criticize in my posts and blocked my trans mutuals!
they just added that to their screenshots of me arguing against simulated csam and the normalization of "just fiction and fantasies " (about kids)
they also said I'm anti science for saying that therapy doesn't make abusers less abusive
they kept trying to argue that everyone needs to be really nice to people who are vocal about their desire to abuse so they'd go to therapy and not commit abuse .
and that niceness includes not even keeping them away from kids .
they also called my trans mutual a terf

i think some of the blurriness surrounding the difference between general transphobes and TERFs is that TERF talking points have been dispersed amongst the masses and disguised as “common sense” concerns. It’s no longer a somewhat fringe intellectual cohort, and people who lobby against trans ppl will gladly claim the feminist label (or even the TERF label in jkr’s case) if it helps legitimize their campaign of bigotry. Engagement with an actual praxis of radical feminism isn’t required, only the seemingly benevolent pursuit of “defending women’s spaces.” And transphobic radfems aren’t typically super concerned about discerning between themselves and others when it comes to non-feminist outsiders appropriating their arguments, so long as the material goal of harming trans people is met

ok but the reason jk rowling is a terf is that she uses her connections to other gender critical people to try and defend her ideas wrapped up in the guise of "protecting women" while the ideology she espouses isnt feminism, she says it is and people who dont understand feminism believe it to be feminism.

it’s a game of broken telephone. ppl are sadly becoming more accepting of this behaviour bc some if the biggest liberal / left creators engage in this kind of behaviour and blur the lines to hide the fact they don’t have extensive knowledge on the things they on. it’s easier to deflect than to cite literary references or statistics. which is funny bc these are the same ppl who call you illiterate when you disagree

Feminism is the equality of all genders. its not possible to be exclusionary of a gender while being feminist. TERF always should have been an abbreviation for Trans Exclusionary Regressive Fascists.
