Another vey important ingredient is this soup is the amount of nutrients, nitrogen and phosphate. Too much, like most urbanized coastal areas, and you get hazardous algae blooms. Those blooms need 70 degree water in in the California bight to become toxic. The water is almost always green in SoCal over the last 5 years but really started about 10myears ago. O2 gets sucked out, lagoons go hypoxic, kelp doesn’t photosynthesize. One type of HAB will give you a red tide, another will give you domoic acid animal die off. Bottomline, we have a nitrogen problem and building on former agricultural land near water ways is greening our coastal,water in Avery bad way.
