College should also be laid back. I stopped participating in an online class and checked at the end of the semester. I passed. The professor sent an email that said “sorry class I was in a coma for 3 days so everyone gets to pass.”

The point of engineering school was not to remember everything you learned in engineering school, but to develop problem solving and applying logical steps through that learning. The dissonance comes from people thinking you are smart for all you learned, while you know exactly how much you didn't learn or have forgotten and therefore feel dumb, but are still smart for the skills you developed more passively.

Once you tell someone you’re an engineer, you’re never allowed to be wrong around them ever again. Because the second you mess up even a tiny bit or do something dumb on accident they always comment with “aren’t you an engineer?”

Once got a “Oh you SMART smart” when I explained the degree I’m working on. I told him “Not any more than anyone else. The difference between someone who’s good at math and one who isn’t, is when you hit the hard parts did you panic and run, or sit with it until you got it? That’s true for everything. Plus I really suck at English classes. “ 😂

im an engineer and at work we all laugh saying we are a bunch of morons trying to solve complex problems, and sometimes we get it right.

I'm dumb, just really good at getting to the right answer through sheer dedication and pattern recognition. like yeah I do RF but that's just waves

This is common in engineering (just a guess) because we're smart enough to figure out how survive school and earn a degree by being good at pattern recognition. The problem is that we compare our knowledge (not pattern recognition ability) against absolute, complete knowledge and feel inadequate. But the reality is.. It was our pattern recognition skills that got us through school and interviews and helps us solve complex problems. Knowledge can be accessed quickly, while these awareness skills cannot. But our subconscious falsely believes knowledge equates to complete intelligence because it's an easier metric than your ability to solve complex problems. I'm a little high. So I also have no idea what's going on at the same time 🤷
