Hiraeth….is a Welsh word with no direct English translation. It describes a deep, bittersweet longing for a home, time, or person that is lost or cannot be returned to—and sometimes for a home or past that never even existed

God damn it… I’m so far from where I used to live not just physically. So much has happened since I had my first home… listening to this makes me go back to the simpler days of when I was a child, being the weird yet fun child. Now, I’m in the military… much of that child is gone but it still shines once in a while when I laugh with my husband, cuddle my dog, talk to my siblings. But, it hurts when I look back on those days. Remembering how I used to be, before I grew up

I’ve been reading through the comments, hoping to find an interpretation similar to how i relate to it, but I haven’t yet. So I hope this finds those who can't put it into words.
To me, it feels like a quiet longing for a home that no longer feels the way it once did. Traditions change or disappear, siblings grow up and build lives of their own, and people we love leave behind empty spaces when they’re gone. Even holidays like Christmas or Easter begin to feel different. It’s almost like growing up means grieving a version of home that still exists in memory, but can never fully be returned to. That's what this sounds like.

This is how it feels going from being healthy to chronically ill, just looking back at who you were before and not being able to go back

hear it? I can see it, feel the wind on my arms. smell the lake, the pines, the fresh grass. I can see the fresh clean snow, the lake frozen over, my nose feeling the bite of cold as I run inside for hot cocoa. each note another sensation rekindled

It felt like I did when I stood in the aisle of Homegoods, frozen, because I held a candle that smelled like my grandmother. A flicker of a memory flashes and suddenly I'm 12 years old again, wondering how am I going to do this. But, I'm not. I'm 28, standing in a home goods, placing the candle back on the shelf and pushing my cart.

is it bad that I find myself grieving a fictional character that I created? that I knew from the start would end in tragedy?

Thank you, Pat. This is 100% how it feels. I recently found out the new owners gutted her home and tore up her garden. They cut down the tree her and her husband, my grandpa planted. The home I knew is gone.

It feels like the day I realized I hardly had any friends, that I helped everyone on their life path, but it's just the person who guides them until they're at their stop, while I continue to move through the world without knowing if I'll ever find someone to walk with me again.
