7 year olds typically don't have the attention span for something as involved as that, so NTA.

NTA, 7 is too young to participate. OP also said he can come and hangout with the 9 yo but she declined

I may be misinterpreting the friend here but... "I'll find something else to do with him".. she's not going now.

it has to be in the 90s because its easy to solve mysteries when cell phones exist

I don't know, when I was a kid it was very normal to be excluded for things because I was too young. yeah, it sucked, and sometimes I cried. you know, because I was very young. they get over it. cut-offs happen. you don't make the team, you don't get invited to the party, whatever. it sucks and you deal with it. and yeah, a 7-year-old and a 10 year old are in very different places.

NTA but with suggestive material and all that involved in the murder mystery maybe do more to find adults to meet the quota. 10 and 11 still feel too young to participate.

As a mother of a 7 year old, stop trying to bring your kids to everything! A 7 year old and 9-10 year olds act very differently.

I think you should’ve not had any 11 or 10 y/os in the first place, it should’ve been adults only bc then it doesn’t really seem fair have the kids all play in the kids room

Well personally I wouldn’t invite any kids. 10 and 11 is pretty young to be a part of a murder mystery. Who thinks it would be a good idea in the first place? 😂😳

I went to one of those murder mystery dinner things when I was about 10, I was so bored to tears. Don't take your kids to stuff like that.

OP said he could come and stay in the other room with the 9 year old- and she didn't want that. she wants him to be out and about playing and engaging with what they're doing. NO. 🤷🏼♀️

I think OP is an idiot for not explicitly discussing all the children's roles for the party, but I don't think he is an AH for not wanting a 7-year-old to attend the party. I also think his friend should have asked him what her son was supposed to do or if he was invited.

I have an almost 7 year old son and a 13 year old daughter… VERY different needs for both! I could absolutely bring my daughter to something like that and she would be 100% independent unless an emergency occurs. My son would be on me every 30-60 seconds for something, even with a game or other kids to occupy his time. OP is absolutely ok with how she handled this. As a parent, that friend should understand and either just bow out to care for her son or leave the son with his dad so she can participate. It’s not that deep.

dude doesn't have enough adult friends for his murder mystery themed party. he should have made different plans when that became clear instead of drafting preteens.

I volunteer with 7 and 8 year olds. Many could totally do a mystery game and some would find it boring. But these games also usually have characters to play and then bonus people can also try to solve. It seems like OP and friend could have communicated better, but why act like the 7 year old can't come at all to the home? This may very well be a thing that both kids go or nobody goes because there would be too much headache for their family to split them up. NTA, but figure out details better earlier.
