Go ape is entirely aimed at kids😅Obviously adults can and do go but it’s a kids activity, first come first serve is also pretty standard it’s annoying sure but bitching about it is odd

The Go Ape near me has course of different levels and while it is family friendly it is not solely aided at children. Have we really become a society where family friendly means for kids only?

I don’t think he’s the ah for asking, I think it’s weird the instructor wouldn’t let them go first. But the way he’s talking about seems very cocky to me

Also if you guys had gone first, since you’re both confident climbers- it would’ve probably helped the kid’s confidence ALOT

Depends on how he asked, and being GF wasn’t on his side AND the family could hear him? I’m guessing it wasn’t as politely as he imagines it was 😅😂 Conceptually it’s not inherently an AH move but it sounds like he did it in an AH way

We brought my 2 year old nephew to mini golf for his first time the other day and we regularly let people pass us because we knew we were slow. I'm with OP, that wasn't an unreasonable request and there's no reason they can't let people go first

He’s not wrong but there’s a better way to handle it. He could’ve just told the family that they are experienced and since they are nervous they could go first to show them how to do it and that’s it’s not so bad

used to work at somewhere similar. NTA for asking lol. Totally normal to ask and normally we would try to put the people who were visibly nervous in the back anyways— better experience for everyone. Most nervous kids got more upset when there were a bunch of people behind them watching anyways. Willing to bet it took 3+ hours bc OP was stressing them out…that’s normally how this situation went down. He would be TA if he said that loudly IN FRONT of the kids though.

NTA for request itself but you presented it in a rude and off putting manner. If I was course instructor you were asking and had the ability to let you go I would would hesitate and you sounded entitled. If you were like “ hey I can see you guys are nervous, it’s probably your first time here and you want to be able to go at your own pace. That’s perfectly understandable. We’ve done these courses before and will be quick. Do you mind if we go first so you guys can take your time and enjoy it?”

Is this an insurance thing? Did the instructor have to stay with the whole group?

Rather than saying the kids would be slow he should have left it at we confident on courses and it might make the kids less nervous to see us go first. But also that would be so annoying.

In theory he's right, but I get the sense that how he worded it he was kinda cocky/TA about it. Also while some are made for kids, go ape is definitely not just for kids. Especially as a lot of them you're self-belaying: in charge of clipping and unclipping your own harness from the ziplines and wires. Like you literally have the ability to be stood at the top of a huge tree with 0 tethering if you're not careful, so kids need constant supervision. 10 years old is the minimum age for those courses (for anyone wondering)

I guarantee if the adults in the slow group heard you talk shit they were purposely going extra extra slow. Just for you. 😂

Not the AH for asking, kinda the AH for how they asked. Could've just asked the family outright, "Hey, I noticed you're all new to this. Would it be okay for us to go first so that you can take your time and not feel pressured? The kids can watch us at first to see how the course goes, if that helps?" The way OP asked both put down the other group and put the worker in an awkward spot. I feel sorry for the kids, who were already nervous, hearing adults go off about how they'll be too slow.

You should have asked the group in front of you not the instructor. It’s rude since you’re ignoring them and it’s a favor you want from them

I feel like this is a situation where you kindly ask the parents if they would mind if you went first, they likely would have agreed if you’re nice about it

NTA, but depends on how you asked. The fact the other adults gave you dirty looks strongly implies you asked loudly and rudely, but the actual request itself is perfectly fine.

In my experience on Ropes courses there are tiers to it. So you'll have a short like 1 hour one for kids, and I've done one that took 6 hours. They have age and difficulty restrictions. sounds like they went to a kids park and got mad there were kids.

if anyrhing having confident and calm climbers go first may have helped ease the kids, however he could have been way nicer about how he asked

How annoying. They should have different courses.... One for adults and one for kids and keep the scared kids away from the scary one. 😒

Nta for asking, but ta for the way OP asked and reacted. "Hey, would you mind if we go first? We have done this before, and would love to reassure the kids it's okay and show them how to do it safely" probably would've gone over better.
