@amyhansenifbbpro: So many people ask me, “What do you use for fertilizer?” But honestly, I think that’s the wrong question. The better question is, How healthy is your soil? 🌱 I don’t constantly feed my garden. I focus on building healthy soil from the beginning and letting that soil do the heavy lifting. The other thing I do? I pretty much disregard most traditional plant spacing recommendations. 😂 I plant intensively and use companion planting to create a garden that’s thick, lush and productive. Healthy soil + intensive planting is my way, and obviously it’s working! No secret fertilizer or magic potion. Just a different way of thinking about how we grow & quite frankly, mimicking how things are already growing in nature! Are you a rule following plant spacer… or do you cram them in like me? Your garden is stunning!! I’m in Alaska and have faced such challenges this year. I feel lost with my soil and plant placement. Everything grows HUGE here and with climate challenges I’ve dealt with a lot of pests, soils to dense, and unpredictable weather.

Hi! I’m a baby gardener and we just moved into our house where the soil is super dry and kinda cakey. Ive put manure and covered with topsoil and mulch to help with breaking it down and eventually improving soil structure. Anything else I can do?

💚 All of this is accurate. I do the same thing but a direct compost method using cover crops and organic matter. Espoma Tomato Tone to feed peppers and tomatoes during transplanting and throughout season. Dr Earth for everything else due to they have beneficial fungi to boost root health by extension and a slow release formula that works with micro organisms. Diversity with native plants to keep soil structure and housing for beneficial insects. Natives bring in natives. Herbs as companion plants not just for pest control but compounds in soil. Annual flowers to always have something blooming for pollinators. Feeding soil throughout season and the winter in order to have a strong micro organism colony. This year I kept the cover crops near tomato plants as a living mulch and when cut down short carbon was released to feed micro organisms.

I built a greenhouse this year and was in such a rush to get the garden going that I failed to fertilize like I should have. Started beautiful but didn’t produce a lot. Going to take a break for the fall and finish the grow beds and water system. Check out my chaos. lol looks pretty but it was my first year. Empty nest syndrome.
