As we continue Exploring Hoodoo in America, today we’re looking at something we haven’t really talked about yet: spiritual timing. Zora Neale Hurston documented specific hours for spirit mediums and even experienced timed spirit work during her own training. But what I love most is that she documented multiple times, not one universal “Hoodoo hour.” That’s something this entire series keeps showing us: there was structure without complete uniformity. Different practitioners had different methods, teachings, and ways of doing the work. The more we study our history, the more we get to understand not just what our ancestors did, but how they understood the work itself.
