@sayitoncedogtraining: Space is a nervous dog’s best friend. For this particular dog, I recommended walking her on a long line instead of a standard six-foot leash. When a nervous dog repeatedly reaches the end of a short leash, that sudden pressure can make them feel trapped and cause them to panic. A long line gives them more room to move, process the environment, and create distance without constantly hitting the end of the leash. That does not mean allowing your dog to drag you wherever they want. The goal is still safety and control, but with enough space for the dog to make better decisions without feeling forced into every situation. You can see the value of that space in this video. This dog normally does not like approaching new people, but because I did not pressure her and gave her the freedom to move away, she eventually chose to come over and ask me for affection. That choice matters. With nervous dogs, forcing interaction may get them physically closer to someone, but it does not necessarily make them feel safer. Sometimes the fastest way to build trust is to stop trying so hard to close the distance. Give them space. Let them observe. Let them move away. Then give them the opportunity to come back when they are ready.
