@americantravelarchives: Make sure to add this to your bucket list… Episode 30: Visit the Lincoln Memorial 🇺🇸 There’s a 19-foot statue in Washington, D.C. that has stood over some of the most important moments in American history. This is America in 250, where we’re sharing 250 things to do across America for the 250th anniversary. Inside the Lincoln Memorial, Abraham Lincoln sits surrounded by 36 columns, representing the 36 states in the Union when he died. On the walls are the full text of his Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address. But what makes this place even more powerful is everything that has happened on these steps. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech here. In 1939, Marian Anderson performed at the memorial after being denied the opportunity to perform at Constitution Hall because of segregation. Standing inside and seeing the size of the statue is incredible, but stepping outside and looking down the Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument is the moment that really stayed with us. And the best part? It’s completely free and open 24 hours a day. Go early in the morning or after dark when the memorial is beautifully lit and the crowds are smaller. If you’re anywhere near Washington, D.C., standing on these steps is something you need to experience for yourself. Send this to someone who needs to see the Lincoln Memorial in person and follow americantravelarchives for more of America in 250.
