@sororityrushcoach: Moms, rush week can be emotional for YOU too!! 💕 You want her to be happy, you want everything to go well, and when she’s upset, your first instinct is probably to jump in and try to fix it. But sometimes the best thing you can do is know when to step back a little. Here are 7 things to avoid during recruitment: 1️⃣ Assuming a legacy connection guarantees her anything. Legacy policies have changed SO much, and even if you had an amazing experience in your chapter, her recruitment is completely separate from yours. 2️⃣ Comparing her invitation list to another girl’s. Two girls can start recruitment together and have completely different schedules. Don’t let someone else’s invitations change how she feels about her own! 3️⃣ Assuming a cut means she did something wrong. It doesn’t!! Chapters make a LOT of cuts throughout recruitment, especially at competitive schools. She can have a great conversation and still not be invited back. 4️⃣ Texting her for updates after every single party. Let her actually experience recruitment! She’ll tell you everything when she has a chance. 5️⃣ Giving advice based on how rush worked when you went through it. You can absolutely share your experience, but recruitment has changed A LOT. What mattered when you rushed may not be relevant now. 6️⃣ Sharing her recruitment details with other people, ESPECIALLY with moms of girls currently IN the sororities. Her rankings, cuts, invitation list, and opinions about chapters are hers to share. If she tells you something privately, keep it between the two of you. What you choose to share CAN impact whether she’s invited back or not, for the better or worse. 7️⃣ Trying to fix every disappointment. This might be the hardest one. You don’t have to convince her that she shouldn’t be upset. Let her be disappointed, listen, and then help her focus on what she still has in front of her. One of the BEST things you can do during rush is ask questions instead of giving opinions. 💗 How did you feel there? Who did you talk to? Are you excited to go back? Could you see yourself finding a few really good friends there? Did it feel like the kind of sisterhood you’re looking for? If you knew nothing about the chapter going in, do you think you would’ve felt differently about it? You could remind yourself it’s “her” experience 1,000 times, but at the end of the day, it’s completely normal to feel HEAVILY invested in recruitment right alongside her! 💕 You’re going to experience the highs and disappointments too. Just remember to give her space to form her own opinions about each chapter, and be the person she can talk everything through with along the way. Good luck to all the rush mamas this week!
