@von.robinson: I reject FBA ideology where it moves beyond defining Black Americans and starts teaching separation, resentment and hostility toward other Black people. I believe Black Americans are a distinct ethnic group with our own history, culture, political interests and legitimate claim to lineage-based reparations. I support delineation. I support Black American institution building. I support protecting our history and organizing around our specific economic and political interests. Where I separate from FBA is the idea that Black American identity needs an enemy. I reject calling Africans invaders. I reject treating Caribbean people as outsiders who are somehow responsible for Black American decline. I reject ancestry purity tests. I reject rewriting Black American history as if our struggle developed in isolation from Haiti, Jamaica, Ghana, the wider African diaspora and the African continent itself. Some of the most influential people in Black American history had direct Caribbean or international roots. Our greatest civil rights leaders also understood that Black liberation was connected globally. Black Americans have already defined ourselves. Our music did it. Our churches did it. Our language did it. Our political movements did it. Our families, neighborhoods, institutions and history did it. We do not need hostility to prove that we are a people. That is where FBA loses me. Delineation should create clarity, political organization and economic power. Once it becomes contempt for other Black populations, I no longer see it as protection of Black American identity. I see it as separation dressed up as identity.
