If you're thinking about trying the Cash Envelope Method, here's how to set yourself up for success: ✔️ Only use cash envelopes for variable spending. Think about the categories where you get to choose how much you spend, like food, fun, clothing, or personal spending. Your fixed expenses—like your mortgage, utilities, insurance, and other bills—should stay in your checking account so they're there when it's time to pay them. ✔️ Start with just one or two envelopes. You don't need an envelope for every category in your budget. Pick the spending categories where you tend to go over budget the most and start there. ✔️ Fill your envelopes every payday. Decide how much money each category gets before you spend a dollar. Once the cash is in the envelope, that's your spending limit until the next time you refill it. ✔️ Respect the empty envelope. When the cash is gone, you've reached your spending limit for that category. No borrowing from another envelope, and no swiping your debit or credit card to make up the difference. That's where the learning happens. ✔️ Pay attention to the decisions you make. Cash has a way of making the consequences of your spending feel real. When you only have $20 left in your food envelope, you're much more likely to stop and ask yourself, "Do I really need this?" That pause is one of the biggest reasons this system works. The Cash Envelope Method isn't about making budgeting harder. It's about creating accountability in the areas where you need it most.
