every dog deserves a chance 🤍 It’s been almost two years since I rescued mama chai and her baby puppies from the side of the road. Her puppies were left in a basket on the edge of the street and a friend of mine rang me when she spotted them. Coincidentally I had actually seen a lactating dog in that area a few days prior and was looking for her puppies to get them all help. I knew the mom had to be around somewhere, so I put the babies safe into my bag with a little soft toy and a blanket I brought with me to collect them. As soon as I tracked down mama chai and helped reunite her with her babies…. I had to figure out how to get them all safely to the vet clinic for urgent treatment. The puppies were getting cold, one was extremely weak, and the traffic was becoming dangerous. People nearby said the mother would be “eliminated” if I didn’t take her. As the sun was setting, I knew they wouldn’t survive the night like this. After over an hour of trying to gain mama Chai’s trust with food and gently petting her speaking with her… it became urgent that I got her to safety out of that road. No dog catcher was available and I had no supplies. I set up my phone to actually use as a “mirror” so I could see what she was doing without scaring her away by staring, but it ended up capturing her very intense rescue. I never planned to share this footage I’m actually quite embarrassed as it’s not a “nice” rescue or how I ever would’ve planned, but this is the reality. Things don’t always go to plan. It doesn’t mean we give up. When her life was on the line I had to act fast and a few bites were worth saving this family. After some gentle pets I carefully gripped the nape of her neck and was about to lift her slowly with the blanket, but unfortunately she panicked. I knew if I let go I would never get a second chance and this was now or never. Was this the best way? No. Was it the only way in an urgent scenario that saved all of their lives? Yes. As soon as she realized I wasn’t scared and wasn’t going to give up on her, she quickly calmed down letting me put on a harness while holding her in my lap and we even got on a bike together to the vet clinic with her babies in my bag 🥹🐾 They received emergency treatment and could move to a safe foster home a few days later! Not every rescue is straight forward. They are not always easy. But just because a dog is fearful does not mean we shouldn’t help them. Now chai, latte, and matcha are all happily adopted in their forever homes! 🌈🏡🌸 Everg dog deserves a chance!
