This was beautiful. Reminds me of this term from Chicanx Studies: 'Rasquachismo' which refers to the practice/aesthetic of 'making do.' Using scraps or what other people would consider trash for art or repurposed for domestic usefulness or to make our homes and lives prettier. It's an idea that's made It's way into Mexican-American art, but I see it in all the ways we find beauty and purpose in what others would disregard, the things that enrich our lives can be read as signs of "cheapness". Being mixed, being Mexican-American, occupying this third space is so emotional and complicated and you beautifully articulated a feeling of appreciation and pride and embarrassment and shame and love.

Make up displays are really well made. They last for years. Estée Lauder is a high end brand. Your mom is cool. And has great taste.

This was beautiful and it resonated with me as a Mexican-American. My family does a lot of the same things. Our cultures are very similar. It's hard to explain to my American friends why we do certain things... why we drive a car that's been in the family for three generations,Why our parents are and grandparents live in our house ,why we don't kick somebody out at 18, I know it goes beyond grocery stores. It's our culture. It's what makes us who we are

The story about your mom taking the display is heart breaking. I always ask stores like Sephora for their big decorations when they habe big plastic gems and stuff.

every non-white group in the US, especially black people, knows what this feels like. White people love your culture, your martial arts, your food, your music, but they don't love you. We all know what that feels like. My heart goes out to you and your mother who deserves so much better. our solidarity took a hit because some people think a child should be executed over a bottle of drink. we need more stories to humanize each other.

as a Colombian American, this made me cry. I felt this so hard growing up and now, even though I grew up darker then, I am lighter skin now. and i walk around with ambiguity and people darker than me assume I'm white. when I spent my childhood knowing I wasn't, having nasty jokes or sneering. obviously not all of my white friends were like this but there were enough white people around who were. now I live in LA. and the latinos here dont always assume I'm one of them. and all I want them to know is that I love living here BECAUSE of them, because it feels like home when they speak in Spanish, even if its with a different accent than I'm used to.

That’s a beautiful story! I was raised as a poor, white person. I was taught to appreciate the creativity associated with reusing/recycling. I took a job where I had to attend trainings with my computer. I did not have a computer case, so I used a fabric diaper bag, I found on sale. I would pull my computer out of my diaper bag, spread the changing pad on the table, like a place mat, and put my computer on top of it. Then another attendee saw my converted computer/diaper bag and made fun of me. I was young and embarrassed. I never used the diaper/computer bag again. Today, it wouldn’t bother me, but then, I can remember my face burning with the shame of pretending to have a computer bag. Don’t let anyone make you feel less than them.

i’m chinese and never knew others felt the same way about our little asian grocery stores. these stores meant so much to me bc i too, understood what they were thinking and how my parents home represents this thinking too. adjacently, there was an excellent video essay about how the plastic chairs in those street side food stalls were such an integral part of the vietnamese culture, how it sits so many people while it serves their cultural foods. and while vietnam advances, those plastic chairs still stand the test of time

These are the conversations that NEED to be had!! People make fun out of absolute ignorance. They need to have uncomfortable conversations, and they SHOULD be embarrassed. Sometimes learning and growing is painful. Also the embarrassment you feel being “white” for different reasons those of us with conscience feel that shame often! Privilege is ugly and arrogant and painful. I hope one day we learn to really see the beauty that lives in our differences. For now all I can do is speak up, and teach my babies to love and respect your babies. I am sorry you have felt this pain. Thank you for your candidness!
