They do this to control the tree's height, as it reduces vertical energy, and forces the plant to focus its nutrients on producing more fruit closer to the ground. The top bud of a healthy upright tree normally releases hormones called auxins that drive upward growth. Jamming foreign timber into the vascular core physically disrupts or slows the unimpeded downward/upward flow of these signaling hormones and nutrients. Applying a paste made from turmeric acts as a natural antiseptic. Turmeric contains curcumin and essential oils that protect the open wound from tropical fungi, bacteria, and insect entry while the tree heals.
