There’s been a lot of conversation online about the Lindsay Clancy case, as highlighted by @Mackenzie, including claims that she had postpartum OCD and that OCD caused her actions. There is no public evidence that she was diagnosed with postpartum OCD, and making that connection spreads a harmful misunderstanding of what OCD actually is. People with OCD can experience incredibly disturbing, unwanted intrusive thoughts, including thoughts or images about harming the people they love. A defining feature of OCD is that these thoughts are unwanted and go against the person’s values and desires. People with harm-related OCD are distressed by these thoughts and do not want to act on them. In fact, the fear that they *could* act on them is often exactly what fuels the OCD cycle. That’s why this kind of misinformation can be so damaging. Someone already terrified by the thought “What if I hurt my child?” may see people attributing horrific actions to OCD and think, “Does this mean I’m capable of doing that too?” We can and should educate people about postpartum OCD. But we need to do it accurately, without assigning diagnoses to people who haven’t been evaluated or reinforcing the very fears that people with OCD are already struggling with. The OCD community deserves better. #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdproblems #intrusivethoughts #lindsayclancy
