She went away as soon as her babies were fledge worthy. She knew she was compromising their safety because Predators kept coming near because they sensed her weakness. BREAKS MY HEART!!!

I just keep thinking of how much she achieved in her life. So many babies fledged and so many livestreams that touched thousands of people. Then of course, her biggest achievement was saving Big Bear from development. Even without her, because of her, Eagles in this area can continue to prosper like her and Shadow did for so long. She left behind an incredible legacy.

Its so sad looking back on this, to think she was sick for so long and yet she still took care of her babies. When Sandy fell she stayed with her, feeding and protecting her. I am grateful she was rescued so she could pass away peacefully and we all got some closure. ❤️❤️❤️

Impossible to help her while on her nest. Too late by the time she got to the ground. What a beautiful creature. At least she was cared for and was not taken by an animal.

unfortunately even had we known, I dont think there was any other possible outcome. rescue wasn't possible until she was grounded.

Knowing full well that when an animal stops grooming itself it's a very bad sign. She gave her life to have that second clutch.

definitely the signs were there. and now I know for sure Shadow knew. animals know, they can smell it, their senses are way better than ours. shadow new he had to take over the feeding alone. he's been morning longer than we have. how blessed we are to have known Jackie thank you Sandy! ❤🙏❤🙏

I believe that she told him. They communicate. We don’t know what the chortles were about. We can only assume. She wasn’t right all season. She seemed so different. I will always love and miss her. But I am also looking forward to what Shadow’s future holds. 💔❤️❤️❤️

Dang-we all knew Jackie didn’t look well but chalked it up to a long breeding season. Those of us who know Jackie knew but we didn’t know what exactly we were seeing. She was ill! She stayed strong for as long as she could and completed her one final miracle raising two amazing eagles. 🦅

Her sitting there unpreened with her eyes closed should have been our biggest warning sign something was very wrong. Birds squint and close their eyes like that when they're in a lot of pain or very sick.. They stop preening first, they sit very still and squint, sit with their eyes closed, and then they self isolate.. All the signs were there, but there wasn't anything we could have done. We're only allowed to intervene once they're grounded and in obvious distress, but by the time a bird like that is grounded and showing distress it is usually too late. They hide their illnesses so, so well until they can't anymore.. This has been such a disturbing case to me. You can see she's lost weight, she's not preening anymore. The squinting, eyes closing.. Ravenous appetite, but no real motivation or energy to hunt. When those symptoms showed up in my chickens it was always something bad I couldn't bring them back from. I'm wondering if she got a hold of something that had eaten or been around Moth Balls? Moth balls are extremely toxic and poison the ground for years and years. They caused very similar symptoms in my birds before they died. The moth balls toxins did not show up in any of the blood test. Only an autopsy showed what they had done. They cause extreme anemia, and especially kidney damage. They are NOT safe. My second guess was if she had a third soft shelled egg that got trapped inside of her and burst? Causing sepsis. But that infection would have shown on X Rays.. I am extremely concerned because if she got into something, or ate something containing the moth ball toxins then Shadow and the rest are at extreme risk, too. I know there are several elderly people who live in and around Big Bear and they could be using moth balls in their home or to keep rats away outside. Unaware of just how extremely toxic and dangerous they are to our environment and how badly they leech into the soil. We were told to put moth balls underneath our chicken coop to deter rats. It was an area they could not touch or get to, so we thought it was fine. It wasn't. The soil around the coop became contaminated and the worms they were eating were dosed with moth ball toxins.
