Did you know that potting “soil” is soiless?! 🫨 Yas, kween, most potting “soil” does not actually have topsoil in it! Topsoil is the natural layer of soil we see when we step outdoors and into our parks, forests, jungles, and savannahs, having formed at the surface of our precious planet over millions of years from rock decomposition and wind and water movement. The potting soil often used for indoor house plants is a mixture of a bunch of different materials like sphagnum peat moss, bark, perlite, vermiculite, compost, sand, wood fiber, and/or coconut fiber designed for plants that live in containers or planters. While topsoil mixtures are used in outdoor gardening, topsoil is far too dense for our potted kweens. Topsoil can also carry fungus and other planty pathogens that can be harmful for our green gurls. Potting soil is sterilized, and thus safer for potted plants, and has a loose and fluffy texture that allows for proper aeration, drainage, and root growth. Some potting soil contains added fertilizers, a mixture of minerals that are essentially vitamins for our green gurls, their roots absorbing all those delicious nutrients when the water releases them in the soil mix. Other potting soil mixes may not have fertilizer added, so be sure to take note and read the ingredients for the one you choose. When brainstorming your potting soil mixture recipe, make sure it is tailored for your particular green gurl. Cacti and succulents prefer a coarse and sandy mix; ferns enjoy a mix with more peat moss or sphagnum for moisture retention; seedlings + rooting cuttings like a lighter and finer-textured mix; most tropical kweens enjoy a balanced, well-drained, and aerated mix, while many orchids thrive in just fir bark or sphagnum moss. Now, while you are able to find these specific blends already packaged and ready for purchase at most of your local plant shops and nurseries, it can also be fun to add various ingredients to an all-purpose potting soil mixture to make your own DIY soil blend. I find it to be a therapeutic process, gurl, and it’s the perfect excuse to get your hands dirty! 🎥 @HGTV Handmade #soi #soilmix #soilmixture #plantkween #plantnerd #naturenerd
