A fictional scholar from a century-old story became the way millions of Chinese graduates describe themselves. The graduates meant it about themselves, and if you look at the numbers behind the metaphor, you'll get why. In 2025, 12.22 million students walked out of Chinese universities, a record, the fourth straight year past 10 million. Youth unemployment for 16-to 24-year-olds hit 17.8% in July and touched 18.9% in August, the highest reading since the measure was rebuilt in 2023. Some took the gown off. A design master's graduate spent a month working a till. The business press ran features on educated graduates ringing up registers, harvesting sea urchins on the coast, and scooping soft-serve at an IKEA. State media told them to hurry up about it: swallow their pride and take the factory job, go turn screws on an assembly line. But many held out, and sunk everything into one last exam - the Civil Service Exam. Competition for a civil service seat grew so fierce that a saying began circulating as a family motto: of the three ways a child can fail their parents, holding no state post is the worst.
