@washingtonpost: Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and admitted that he shot the executive outside an investor conference in late 2024. Mangione, 28, read a statement in court in which he described tracking Thompson to the conference in Midtown Manhattan and shooting Thompson with a 3D-printed gun equipped with a silencer. Mangione had previously said he was not guilty of the state and federal charges against him in connection with Thompson’s killing. He is expected to stand trial next month on state murder charges. Mangione faces a maximum of life in prison on the federal stalking charges. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December. Caption from reporting by Tim Craig, Joanna Slater and Jeremy Roebuck.
Why did he say he was guilty? We were playing smashbros together that day.

It’s a significant development legally, but there are still separate proceedings ahead, so the full outcome won’t be known until all trials and sentencing are completed

For those of you who don’t understand - he’s literally about to get away with murder for a federal felony stalking plea. It’s genius.

They file instantly your not understanding how bad they drop the ball. This will set presidents for future cases. Double Jeopardy goes into effect basically he can’t be prosecuted for the same crime. His attorneys are pretty amazing coming up with this loop.

Legally speaking Where’s the double jeopardy though? If you are charged only with stalking, isn’t the state murder charge still open? Or is the admission facts derived in the federal case not usable in the state case?

This is such a gross, trivializing format for a legacy news outlet to use when covering a murder case. Regardless of where you stand on the case itself, I don’t understand why you’d pay this lady to act out a weird sketch instead of just giving us the relevant information.
