To give Burt Young an awesome scene to perform late in his career.

because canonically Old Man Bacala was Mustang Sallys godfather. It makes the hit easier when you hire someone who can get within spitting distance and not arouse suspicion 🥸

He was begged by Junior not to do it. Old man Baccala felt useless and didn't want to die a sick old man, he wanted to do it so he felt useful for a change. if the hit went as planned, he'd just be where he was before, being cared for by a nurse and still sick. if it didn't go as planned he was ready to go he was already terminal. Sally was his God son but in name only, he hated the guy. He was their top hitman back in their day.

Still pisses me off that Tony didn’t stop it. Bobby didn’t deserve to lose his dad like that.

Mustang sally was on the lamb. Old man bacala was the only one who would believably be able to visit him

The old man wanted to do it and he’s probably the only one who could get close enough.
