@annikaunmasked: Your pain did not become real when someone else finally recognized it. Social media didn’t create your disability— it helped you find people who could name what you were living. Autism is not a social media trend. Context note: This is Annika-first content—a window into one autistic and ADHD life, not a definition of autism or ADHD. I am white, relatively low support needs, and not physically disabled. My perspective is not universal, and what works for me may not work for you. Please take what resonates and make room for experiences different from mine. #annikaunmasked #unmasking #autisminwomen #autism #audhd

thank you, you said this so well. the worst is "why do you need to put a label on yourself? everyone's different." The label was life-changing. I've always felt like I don't belong and for the first time ever, I could finally name WHY. Like wow I'm not broken, I just literally have a different brain and that's okay.

I wouldn’t have known I was autistic without social media. Or it would have taken WAY too long to figure it out. I’m 39 with 3 kids. I now know and can be a better version of myself and explain the things that don’t quite make sense to typical people

Had to self diagnose cause the real test costs more than 2k… so yes I did my research and found my people, I helped myself cause the system didn’t

People who even say that need major education. I’ve lived with autism my entire life. It makes it hard to develop relationships and causes major isolation.

It is a trend but it’s also real because social media changed their algorithms to group people by their browsing behaviour and it immediately categorized us appropriately and pipelined us all into neurodiversity content.

51 years lived experience. The fear that makes us over think any post 👀 The community that's kept me connected 👀 If the brain would organize itself long enough I got good stories 💚 As a son , as a ex , as a father and all the failed careers. This won't be the last mask 🎭

Got diagnosed last year but had all the criteria to be diagnosed as a kid. Even before the dsm update. It’s actually harder to get diagnosed with it in some ways now. The confusion for normies is that they rolled Asperger Syndrome into autism as a diagnosis. Studies showed it was more closely related to autism than previously believed. And since Asperger Syndrome was named for a doctor who was on the losing side of ww2 and did most of his research in the concentration camps. So now we are level 1 autistic. Also levels are only based on how much the autism affects the people around you and not internal experience of autistic people which is problematic in itself.
