Trying so hard to get someone to understand how you feel, only to be met with defensiveness or blame every time, usually isn't about finding the right words, it's often a sign of something structural in how that relationship handles communication. A lot of us unknowingly trigger defensiveness by referring to someone's behaviour or making them feel responsible for our feelings, even while technically using "I" language. Saying "I feel like you're lying" still starts with I, but it still points the finger, it's not actually expressing a feeling. Real "I" statements stay with the feeling itself and refer to what happened rather than who someone is, when this happened, I felt this way, rather than when you did this, I felt this way. But here's the part that matters more in a relationship where this keeps happening no matter how carefully you communicate, some people genuinely struggle to empathise or take in someone else's side of the story, and that's often a long-standing pattern in the relationship rather than a one-off reaction to how something was worded. You are not going to talk your way into someone's empathy if they're not in a place to offer it. Rewording something for the fifth time won't succeed where the first four attempts didn't, if the block was never really about the wording. The real shift is recognising when you've hit that wall in the relationship, saying your piece once, clearly, and leaving the door open, rather than chasing understanding round after round. If the defensiveness keeps coming regardless, that's not a communication failure on your part, it's information about this relationship and what it can actually hold, and it's worth sitting with what that tells you Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #relationshiptok #toxicrelationship #relationshiptips #relationshipproblems #relationshipissues
