Investigators say the alleged conduct dates back to 2019–2020, when McGuffey was working as an SRO at Smokey Road Middle School. The investigation began in 2025 after authorities received an anonymous complaint, and McGuffey resigned from the sheriff’s office later that month. He turned himself in on August 14, 2026, and, as of the latest reporting, remains in custody while his attorneys seek bond.
