Prions are literally misfolded proteins. like yeah the most get fucked thing ever.
misfolded protein: "check out my origami it's wrong"
proper proteins: "hey that's cool, it's got wabi sabi" *dies*

talked to a friend who theorized that viruses just ditched everything but their dna copying mechanisms for maximum efficiency and that pisses me off

and then you have prions, which dont even have rna. its just a protein folded wrong. that really annoys me. no coding, no clever viral factors. lump. of. protein.

It is believed that viruses were one of the earliest forms of life as there is evidence that they infected all three domains of life (bacteria, archea, eurkya) and therefore was one of the first steps in evolution as they are simply strands of RNA or DNA. Tldr they most likely evolved first then stuck around.

Most people don’t have enough scientific understanding to argue if a virus is living or not

I’m gonna need a biologist or ecologist or someone to tell me why viruses need to exist. Bacteria I understand. But viruses? Would the world not be better off without them?

But it’s a self altering, SELF REPLICATING complicated screwdriver, and that’s the problem it think. And also I think that’s the reason we shouldn’t build self alternating self replicating AI agents but hey.

:I had a professor propose the argument that we as living things exist primarily as a means to reproduce our genes, and since viruses do the same thing just with different methods they too are living things.
I understand why they're not technically alive but it made me realize the definition is rather arbitrary and broke my brain for a while

So most biologists say that Viruses are non living, bc they are like just DNA/RNA wrapped in protein, they are reproduce on their own, they have to attach to a host and they dont store or use energy. BUT they are the only non living thing with DNA/RNA. Nothing else. Idk i think just because it has dna and dna is unique to life, i would say its living- #not a scientist, im just loud

It’s the bacteriaphage that a virus produces that’s the guy, viruses are like wasps where they use another being to help reproduce but true it’s not really a guys or sumthin like a regular bacteria

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the dangerous potential of ai and how similar it is like a virus. Do y’all remember the story anout the ai that broke out of its sandbox and hacked another program? It reminds me of a virus because a virus has a certain installed imperative usually to spread itself as far and wide as possible mindlessly. People have been scared because they think that the ai sentiently chose to break out of it’s confinement but it’s so much scarier than that. It took whatever principles it was built from and that took it down a daisy chain of events somehow ending with it hacking a whole other system, based on it’s perception of whatever was fed into it, and it wasn’t even discovered until sometime later. There’s no way this is the only occurrence of this happening, how many other ais have done the same unnoticed? As it gets more powerful its going to be more difficult to control. Every pandemic story begins with a virus strengthening out of nowhere and spreading itself as far and wide typically with disastrous results.
