Polygamy and murder in the same list is immoral. But for the general topic, mortality comes down to what Jesus said, "Do unto another what you'd like done to you". He wasn't the first to say that and I'm not a Christian. I'm just trying to paint that as a core maxim in spirituality, and it's structural. But I haven't the space to draw out the structure here. But to quote Tehuti to demonstrate the structuralness, any individual enjoys freedom relative to the others around him. It's how reality is structured. And any act of "stepping on the toes of another", by that metric, is immoral. All the other laws and commandments are just embellishments.

Absolute morality stands on top of relative morality, one doesn’t negate the other. Even infants understand when something good or bad happens, that’s absolute, your relative morality comes second

This feels like you’re jumping to conclusions a bit. Asserting absolute morality exists does NOT necessitate assuming your perception of said absolute is correct. I can believe in an absolute morality, recognize that at least my perception of morality IS heavily impacted by the society I exist within, and accept we as a human collective are still working towards achieving absolute morality exists does truth.

Morality is 100% relative which is why despite of being an atheist I believe we need to keep religion in order to store core values as absolute to prevent chaos and maintain stability

We obviously don’t all agree murder is wrong because there are people who commit murder. So morality cannot be absolute, it’s a social contract relative to the consensus

The starting point should be educating religious folk that morality doesn't come from their book.

I think morality is 100% relative because what people think is right or wrong can depend on their culture, beliefs, how they were brought up, and the situation. Different societies have had completely different ideas about morality throughout history, so I don’t think there are always universal rules. I think morality is more about perspective and context.

morality is a social construct. humans evolved as social animals, we quickly found out what worked and what didn't. what was good for the group or the survival of the social group became morals and what didn't work or what hurt society those people were kicked out or worse. it's not that hard. however based on those groups, morality can change. like different religions, was considered moral and what's not can change from group to group. that's why morality is usually subjective.

if mortality is the consensus of society and A certain society decides to make slavery and murder legal does that mean slavery and murder aren't wrong?

I agree that morality is relative to the culture and surroundings you find yourself in. However, isn’t that just relativism? While it makes sense that our morals are ever shifting , there are things that we can distinguish as immoral plain as day. Take nazi germany for instance, while the atrocities committed was morally ok for those living in Germany it was not recognized as such anywhere else in the world. Relativism lacks the ability to morally criticize the actions of others because the excuse is that it’s all relevant no?

morality is a social construct that humans set, they differ from cultures and time. The fact that values can change means it is subject to the values of the people at the time who created those values. It is in fact purely subjective

While I always appreciate philosophical conversations, this comes off as the opinion of someone who hasn’t done much research into the extensive work and debate that has gone into this very topic for centuries. First off, using practical ethical questions to propose blanket normative arguments isn’t logically sound. Secondly, no sound person who believes in objective morality actually thinks that we will ever reach a point where consensus on actual objective values will come. People disagree over objective fields like history or science or medicine all the time, but that doesn’t make the facts any less objective. Something can be completely objective yet different subjects beings can have differing views on it. Last but not least, without an actual objective standard there is none of the “progress” you speak of. You can’t move towards something that doesn’t exist, so under a relativist view the only distinction between the common moral values of today and 2000 years ago is the passage of time.

This is a great video. I see morality as both relative and absolute depending on the context. For example purposeful killing a living being without any sort of justification should be considered morally bad. However, any moral justification for killing a living being would be inherently relative, so dismissing or forgiving the killing of a being is done in a relative sense.

I see the appeal of absolute morality. Relative is messy, bc any group can justify anything, incl human sacrifice, child marriage, etc. But we're allowed to judge. We don't have to say, "That's their culture, so we have to accept it." But that's also where bigotry comes from, so it's risky and always open to debate. Absolute rules would be cleaner. But that's wishful thinking, the fallacy of Appeal to Consequences. Sometimes truth is ugly.
