@askcatgpt: I’ve not wanted to speak on this until I did my research and I FINALLY feel like I’m ready to share. Over the last several weeks my team and I at catlabs have been deep in the research about AI’s impact on the environment. What we found is that the data isn’t easy to pin down, and there’s a lot we don’t know/that’s not officially reported. Emotionally… the facts make us feel mixed. More on that later. Of course, it’s way too much to fit into one video so I’m gonna be doing a four part series. The first episode today is about electricity then it’ll be water then carbon, and then finally what you can do. If wanna understand in hard FACTS what your impact looks like, follow along. #ai #datacenters
This account accepts money from AI companies to promote AI products. So it's in her best interest to downplay the consequences of AI on the environment. There is better and more credible research out there than this.

It’s honestly not that bad. Eating one hamburger uses significantly more water than thousands of AI queries.

With the water, PLEASE INCLUDE the usage that comes with the additional required power plants!
Data centres require new power sources and THIS IS WHERE THE WATER USE IS! It's insane.
Most people present misleading information by ignoring the actual water use of the entire project.

Are you getting any compensation for this? Promoting AI centers?

There’s a lot of negativity for data centers which are just a sign of how badly informed people. This is something companies like Meta need to address. They all look evil at the moment.

It's kinda mad to talk about a single nonessential strand of one industry used by only a relatively small % of all people using 0.8% of global power like that's negligible.

Tons of new data centers had to be built to support all the streaming services but I don't remember people as being as vocal about it then

People also don't understand that a SINGLE 5MIN SHOWER takes around 10-15 GALLONS of water. One shower. 5mins. How many prompts does that single shower equate to? Over 100k prompts 😭

Ok but remember- 1/4th, 3/4ths, 1/16th, (insert negligable fraction) of the power consumption that humans use for AI- it doesnt matter, because AI is gonna help us solve the climate crisis, which (i think) we all agree is the biggest existential problem human beings have thus far faced throughout our species' history. If only we throw more intelligence at the obvious problem (Co2 emmisions increasing infinitely with a simultaneously overburgeoning population) we will certainly solve the problem! Maybe Opus 65,059.52 will finally tell us how to solve it- "cut emmisions, or earth's ecosystem will no longer habitable". Wowee- thanks for the insight Opus 65,059.52 what would I do without you?!

If you live in city with a bus system and still choose to drive or even take uber then you have no business complaining about the environmental effects of AI

Low % power use at a global and national scale doesn’t put the local impact into perspective. Strain on power grids and increased utility bills for consumers would be more evident when looking at data centres located in rural areas. A proposed data center in my province will use as much power as a major city and much more than the town it will be built beside.

So your stats are a year and a half out of date. How much have they used so far in 2026 including the amount generated with their own generators and what percent of US/Canadian power is that? The rest of the world doesn’t really matter in this discussion
