Lena couldn’t remember the exact moment she started taking care of Miu. Maybe it had always been that way. Even before either of them understood what love was. Even before they knew they would become each other’s favorite person. One of Lena’s earliest memories was of a tiny little girl with messy hair and scraped knees, crouched in the middle of a park path, hugging a worn-out stuffed rabbit to her chest and smiling as if she had discovered the greatest treasure in the world. That girl was Miu. And Lena had been watching her from a nearby bench. “You’re going to get dirty sitting there” Lena had warned. Little Miu had looked up. Then smiled wider. “So?” That had been the first time Lena felt something strange. The urge to protect her. And somehow, that feeling never left. As children, Miu was fearless. She climbed everything. Ran everywhere. Jumped before thinking. Lena spent half her life following behind her. “Careful!” “I’m being careful!” “You literally climbed onto the top of the slide.” “I’m fine!” She never was. Every scraped knee. Every twisted ankle. Every tiny disaster somehow ended with Lena cleaning wounds, carrying backpacks, or reminding Miu to drink water. And Miu always laughed. “You worry too much.” Maybe she did. But she never stopped. When they were seven, Miu nearly fell while trying to reach a drinking fountain that was too tall for her. Lena had dropped to her knees instantly. “Here.” “What are you doing?” “Stand on my back.” Miu blinked. “Seriously?” “Just do it.” Laughing, Miu climbed onto her. A minute later she was happily drinking water while Lena remained on the floor. Years later, Miu would still bring that story up. “You literally became a human stool.” “You were thirsty.” “And you were ridiculous.” Lena secretly loved hearing her laugh. As teenagers, nothing changed. Miu still found trouble. Lena still found Miu. Only now the feelings were harder to ignore. Especially when Miu smiled. Especially when Miu looked for her first in every room. Especially when Lena realized that being needed by Miu was becoming her favorite thing in the world. But she never said anything. Neither did Miu. Life moved on. School ended. College came. And somehow they remained side by side. Years later, Lena found herself sitting beside Miu’s bed at two in the morning. Miu was sick. Again. The apartment was dark except for a small lamp. Medicine bottles covered the nightstand. A half-finished glass of water sat nearby. Miu looked miserable. “I hate being sick.” “I know.” “My head hurts.” “I know.” “My throat hurts.” “I know.” Miu narrowed her eyes. “You sound suspiciously happy about this.” Lena laughed softly. “I’m not happy you’re sick.” “Then why are you smiling?” Because you’re here. Because you still let me take care of you. Because after all these years, this is still where I belong. But Lena didn’t say any of that. Instead, she handed her medicine. “Take this.” Miu groaned dramatically. “I knew there was a catch.” Later that night, after Miu finally fell asleep, Lena remained sitting beside her. Watching. The way she always had. The way she always would. Miu slept curled beneath the blanket, peaceful for the first time all day. Lena reached over and brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead. A small gesture. One she’d done a thousand times. And suddenly she realized something. It wasn’t obligation. It wasn’t habit. It wasn’t friendship. Not anymore. Maybe it never had been. Because for years Lena had been taking care of Miu without expecting anything in return. For years she had chosen her. Again. And again. And again. Not because she had to. But because loving Miu felt as natural as breathing. Lena smiled to herself. Then quietly pulled the blanket higher over Miu’s shoulder. Outside, the city slept. Inside, Miu slept too. Safe. Warm. Protected. Just as she always had been. Because long before either of them knew what they were becoming to each other, Lena had already made her choice. And if she was honest, she had been choosing Miu her entire life. #lenamiu #lenalalina #miunatsha #wlw #fyp
