I had a Japanese bobtail that had her own pet beta fish. I had gotten one for my nephew a few days before his birthday and she would sit and stare and dip her paws into the water. When I gave him the fish she would sit where his bowl was and just cry and cry and cry. So of course I had to get her one. The one I got her was even fiestier than the other and it would actually splash her with water and "attack" her paw when she put it in. She was always so gentle and loved watching her fish

Look, it's not *generally* a good idea to gift pets. There are, of course, exceptions. The main one being when a parent gifts a pet to their child and the parent knows that means, as the adult, they'll be the primary caregiver. I see no issue here. Your baby needed a friend.

My mom pet sat my fish and her cat fell in love. For Christmas her cat got a fish from my fish. She watched it every day for years!!

I saw ppl buy feeder fish and let them swim on the tub at the depth of their cats paws. They do that for enrichment since that’s how they’d act in nature but it feels sad for the fish
